Robert E. Wiggins, Jr. M.D. was recently elected Vice President Elect of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus at the Association’s annual meeting held April 3, 2014 in Rancho Mirage, CA.

The mission of AAPOS is to promote the highest quality medical and surgical eye care worldwide for children and for adults with strabismus.

The goals of AAPOS are to advance the quality of children’s eye care, support the training of pediatric ophthalmologists, support research activities in pediatric ophthalmology, and advance the care of adults with strabismus. The organization establishes practice guidelines for pediatric ophthalmology at the highest level of competence and ethics and encourages the training of ophthalmologists who are primarily concerned with eye care of children. AAPOS fosters concepts that benefit children’s eye health through preventive as well as remedial activities. The organization encourages and supports individual and cooperative clinical research and training in pediatric ophthalmology in ophthalmology residency programs and encourages the creation and maintenance of post-residency training programs. Additionally, AAPOS sponsors post-graduate meetings and seminars and propagates educational materials related to the training of pediatric ophthalmologists.

A recognized authority in children’s eye diseases and neurological diseases of the eye, Dr. Wiggins has practiced Pediatric Ophthalmology and Neuro-ophthalmology at Asheville Eye Associates since 1991.  He also serves on the boards of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Academy of Ophthalmic Executives, and the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company and serves as the Administrator for Asheville Eye Associates.
